Orthotics & Biomechanics

Could Orthotics Be The Solution To Your Pain?

What Are Prescription Orthotics?

Prescription orthotics or custom orthotics are specially crafted shoe inserts that are designed to provide personalised support and alignment for your feet.

Unlike over the counter insoles, custom orthotics are tailored to your unique foot shape, gait and specific needs.

When appropriately prescribed, custom orthotics can be a game changer when it comes to reducing pain, increasing your activity levels and enhancing your quality of life.

What Is Biomechanics?

Biomechanics refers to the interaction between foot, knee, hip and lower back, and it is the relationship between these joints that enables us to move.

This interconnected system of of joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments work together to produce movement and is referred to as the kinetic chain.

Movement at any segment of the kinetic chain will directly impact and affect the movement at other neighbouring joints or segments.

Following injury, the body adapts by altering its movement pattern to avoid pain.

The body is remarkably adaptable and it often compensates for injured areas by relying on other joints and muscles.

While this compensation can help temporarily, it will often lead to overuse type injuries in the long run as other part of the kinetic chain become overloaded.

Therefore, healthy biomechanics is essential for promoting efficient and pain free movement.

What Are the Benefits Of Prescription Orthotics & How Are They Made?

Your therapist will start by taking a full and in-depth history of your injury.

This will include the main pain points, injury history, specifically how this is affecting your quality of life and much more.

From here, a full assessment will be carried out which will include a biomechanical and gait assessment, specific joint testing and a full body check.

Then using a 3D digital scanner, an exact profile of the foot can be replicated.

Based on the assessment findings, condition and foot scans, your orthotic is designed and manufactured in clinic using our 3d printer.

When appropriately prescribed, prescription orthotics can have a huge impact on reducing pain and enhancing your overall quality of life.

“I went to Sharp Physiotherapy after continuous achilles and foot pain. Joe was excellent in my orthotics consultation and thoroughly went through everything with me. He answered all questions that I had about the pain I was experiencing- he is so knowledgeable and definitely knows what he’s talking about. I decided to get the 3D custom orthotics after my NHS orthotics were not giving me the support I needed. The turnaround was so quick and I can already feel the improvements of my new custom orthotics taking place. Definitely worth the investment. 100% recommend Sharp Physio- definitely the best physio I’ve ever been to.”
