Who Is Shockwave Therapy For?

Are you suffering with a long term tendon problem such as your achilles tendon or patella tendon? Are you still struggling to walk due to heel pain? Have you been diagnosed with a calcific rotator cuff tendon? Is tennis elbow still plaguing your every day life? Maybe you have already received treatment that has helped but you have hit a plateau at about 70% improved? Did the problem go away but now it has come back again? If you have answered yes to any of these questions then shockwave could be for you.

What Is Shockwave Therapy?

Shockwave is a medical treatment that uses high energy audible soundwaves to stimulate healing in a variety of conditions. The soundwaves generated by the shockwave device promote increased bloodflow and tissue regeneration, aiding in the healing process.

The science behind radial shockwave therapy involves understanding the physical principles and biological responses that occur when shockwaves are applied to tissues.

Radial shockwaves are generated by a device that contains a projectile mechanism or an electromagnetic coil. Using this device, these shockwaves are focussed on a specific area of the body such as the achilles tendon and the sudden release of energy produces acoustic waves.

These acoustic waves consist of high-pressure phases followed by low-pressure phases, creating shockwaves that propagate through tissues. These shockwaves create mechanical forces as they travel through tissues and these forces vary depending on the tissue’s density and elasticity.

These mechanical forces lead to biological effects, including micro trauma and neovascularization which is the formation of new blood vessels. Microtrauma is believed to stimulate the body’s natural healing processes and the formation of new blood vessels (neovascularization) is crucial for improving blood circulation in areas with compromised vascular supply.

Who Is Shockwave Therapy Not For?

It’s important to note that while shockwave therapy can be effective for certain conditions, it may not be suitable for everyone. Shockwave is generally not recommended for the following:

  1. Pregnant
  2. Growth plate related pain
  3. You are being treated for cancer
  4. Blood clotting disorder
  5. You are taking certain antibiotics
  6. You are taking anticoagulants.
  7. Known tendon tear or rupture in the area.
  8. You have received a steroid injection in to the area in the last 12 weeks.
  9. You have an active infection at or around the treatment site.
  10. You want a one off treatment or quick fix. Shockwave works best in conjunction with hands on treatment and rehab exercises so if you are looking for shockwave in isolation we are not the right clinic for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Many Sessions Of Shockwave Will I Need?

The number of shockwave therapy sessions required can vary depending on the specific condition being treated, the severity of the condition, and how well an individual responds to the treatment. The minimum number of sessions required to have an effect is 3 and generally the maximum is 6. From our experience, there is a ceiling effect at 6 sessions and no further benefit to buying more sessions.

What Is The Price Of Shockwave?

Individual sessions can not be bought as the minimum number of sessions to have an effect is 3. Our 3 session package is £175 and 6 session package is £300.,

Will It Hurt?

Shockwave therapy can cause mild but tolerable discomfort during the treatment

Here are some general points to consider:

  1. During the Procedure: The application of shockwaves can cause a sensation of pressure or mild pain at the treatment site. The intensity of the shockwaves can be adjusted by the healthcare provider based on the patient’s comfort level.
  2. Post-Treatment Sensations: Some individuals may experience soreness, redness, or swelling at the treatment site after a session. These effects are generally temporary and should subside within a few days.

What Are The Benefits Of Shockwave?

  1. Pain Reduction | Shockwave therapy has been shown to be effective in reducing pain for various musculoskeletal conditions, including patella and achilles tendinopathies, tennis elbow, plantar fasciitis, and calcific shoulder tendinopathy.
  2. Faster Recovery – When applied correctly, most patients respond well to shockwave and return to their chosen sports or pastimes quickly.
  3. Non invasive | Unlike injections or surgery, shockwave is a non invasive treatment option with minimal side effects and is tolerated well by most patients.
  4. Tissue Regeneration | Shockwave stimulates blood flow , promoting the body’s natural healing processes and aiding is tissue regeneration.
  5. Alternative To Surgery | In some cases, shockwaves provides a non-surgical alternative for conditions that otherwise may require more invasive options.
